  17. The operation, though successful, was difficult enough to prompt
  18. surgeons to postpone a similar operation on Mandela's right
  19. eye because of a condition he developed while breaking rocks
  20. on Robben Island, where he was held for much of his 27 years'
  21. imprisonment: his tear glands were "burnt out" by the alkalinity
  22. in the limestone. Mandela should be back at work in about a
  23. week, wearing an eye patch.
